Tooth extraction

When a tooth is broken, severely decayed or too damaged to be saved, an extraction may be necessary.

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a relatively routine dental procedure. Under a local anaesthetic, a tooth, including the root, is completely removed from the mouth.

When the tooth is visible, your dentist will displace the tooth in its socket before physically pulling it out.

For teeth that are below the gum line, such as broken teeth or wisdom teeth, an incision will be made in the gum to access the tooth. After the extraction, the gum will be sutured.

Do I need a tooth extraction?

In cases of severely broken or damaged teeth, where the health and strength of the tooth and root are compromised, tooth restoration may not be appropriate.

When all other options to save the tooth have been explored, an extraction will be required.

Your dentist will examine your mouth and teeth to establish if an extraction is necessary.

What happens after the extraction?

After a tooth extraction, you may notice some bleeding. This is quite normal, and your dentist will make sure that it stops after a while. A blot clot should form at the extraction point. Try not to dislodge the clot, if possible, to avoid drying out the area.

Your mouth may temporarily feel a little sore once the anaesthetic wears off, but this should only last for a day or two. Use an icepack for short periods if required to reduce any swelling.

After a tooth extraction, avoid drinking hot drinks, smoking, using mouthwash or brushing the extraction site for the first couple of days.
