Good dental hygiene is the most effective way to keep your teeth and gums healthy for a natural smile.

Regular preventive dental care at the practice, good home dental hygiene and healthy lifestyle choices ensure optimal oral health. You can potentially lower the risk of tooth decay, cavities and gum disease. Good dental hygiene also contributes to a bright, natural smile.

What is home dental hygiene?

An effective daily home tooth care routine is a strong base for good oral and dental health. We advise brushing your teeth for at least two minutes in the morning and two minutes at bedtime.

Use fluoride toothpaste and rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash.

Changing your toothbrush every 3 months, flossing every day and cleaning your tongue with a tongue scraper can also reduce bacteria build-up.

How often should I see the dentist?

At Smile in London, we recommend making an appointment to see your dentist at least twice a year. A dental check-up is an effective way to identify early signs of decay or damage.

Hygiene cleaning at the dentist ensures the removal of plaque, tartar build-up and bacteria deposits in hard to reach areas of your mouth and along the gum line. They may use Airflow® Tooth Polishing or a classic scale and polish.

Your dentist will also advise you on how to look after your teeth with a good daily oral health routine.

Can I reduce the risk of dental problems?

In addition to daily oral care, healthy lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of dental issues. Eating a balanced diet and taking regular exercise can help reduce gum disease and tooth decay, as well as improve the visual appearance of your teeth.

  • Cut down or stop smoking.
  • Reduce drinks with a high sugar content.
  • Reduce excessively sugary or starchy foods.
