Fillings are used to treat tooth cavities frequently caused by decay or damage.

What is a filling?

When you experience tooth pain or sensitivity, cavities can often be the cause. After treating and disinfecting the cavity, a dental filling material is inserted to strengthen the tooth and prevent the cavity from becoming deeper.

Fillings can be made from traditional grey amalgam or a tooth-coloured resin composite.

When do I need a filling?

You may require a filling if you have a tooth cavity that is causing:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain when biting
  • Toothache
  • Bad breath
  • A dark spot on the tooth

During your consultation, your dentist will advise you on the treatment that is right for you which may involve a filling.

What is the treatment for a filling?

If you require a filling, your dentist will first numb the area around the tooth with a local anaesthetic. Damaged and decayed parts of the tooth are then removed and then the cavity is disinfected.

The filling material is inserted into the cavity and quickly hardened. Your dentist will check your bite and then the surface of the filling is smoothed to remove rough spots.
