Sedation

Sedation can sometimes be used during dental treatment in the case of acute dental anxiety.

At Smile in London, we want you to feel comfortable and relaxed about your treatment. We also want to ensure that anxiety is not a barrier to having necessary dental treatment.

Situations where sedation may be possible include:

• Acute nervousness or dental anxiety
• Severe teeth and gum sensitivity
• Difficulty keeping your mouth open
• Complex oral surgery such as implants and restorative work

As sedatives are not painkillers, with either form of sedation your dentist will still give you a local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth to be treated.

What is sedation?

IV sedation involves the injection of a sedative through a vein in your arm or hand before your treatment.

• IV sedation – With IV sedation, you will not fall asleep but you will become very drowsy. Sedated patients often do not remember anything about their dental treatment.

If you are sedated for your treatment, you must be accompanied by a responsible adult who must accompany you until the effects have completely worn off.

This may take up to 24 hours, during which time you should not drive, operate machinery, smoke or consume alcohol.

Is sedation right for me?

Some medical conditions requiring prescription drugs may not be compatible with sedation.  Your dentist will advise you if sedation is right for you during your consultation appointment.
